This is my third attempt. I can already tall that I am a bit heavy handed and I need to adjust the voltage on my machine down a bit. For some silly reason I thought tribal style would be easy. Guess again. It's all about the perfect lines..
grapefruit #4, 9-volt
As I was pondering ideas to put onto the last grapefruit in the refrigerator, a vision of a 9-volt battery popped into my head. I sketched the outline in ballpoint pen and went to work. The shading is still too dark, and I need to get the right stuff to thin my inks properly. I still can't believe how much more stuff I need to buy just to continue to practice. It's almost dishearening. On the positive side, I made some adjustments to the machine set-up and the results were much improved. The line work was less like carving and more like drawing. That's a good thing!.

As far as I'm concerned, tonight's practice is a total success. I made a point to work within my usual style of illustration and I was even able to transfer a stencil onto the fruit for a more accurate outline to follow. The result is pretty much exactly what I was expecting to achieve. I also used an 8 round shader, which I find that I really like much better than the magnums (which are needles in a flat configuration)..

Again, the stencil rubbed off so I had to freehand a bunch of stuff. It was actually pretty frustrating because I could not focus on my technique, rather I had to try to interpret a blurred stencil instead. I think I'm done with grapefruit as a learning aid. Next up: pigskin!.
