tattoo pink sparrowAlmost completed design for a tee. I'm fascinated by the Day of the Dead festival in Hispanic culture. I love the melting together of celebration and morbidity - the proliferation of sugared skulls, decorated skulls, shrines, candles, masses of flowers. It reminds me a little of the aesthetic and mood of the Baz Lurhmann film 'Romeo and Juliet' - which was obviously inspired in part by aspects of that culture. I drew reference from a human skull, marigold flowers and roses, plus also from traditional tattoo designs for the heart, crown, ribbon, butterflies and birds. Some freehanded candles, blossoms and two stars finish it off. I took it all into Illustrator and created clean linework - then hand rendered the colour with pencils (took approx 8 hours non stop). Once I get my silly programs working again I'll clean it up in Photoshop - the skull actually has beautiful blue gradien
