celtic bird tattooafter talking about this for well over two years, i got my second tattoo today: a celtic bird, based on a design from the book of kells . the red head and orangey neck symbolize the head and ruffle of a turkey vulture, a bird with which i've long felt a kinship. i designed the color scheme myself, inspired by the muted hues of illuminated manuscripts. i'm a bit overwhelmed (it's a little bigger than i expected, in order to keep the details). but i'm happy. i keep looking at it, at the bird's face. it's as if he's just lighted here, looking at me, getting used to me. and i'm getting used to him. he looks a little sad, too, and i love that. like he knows where i come from, and he's willing to help me carry that for the rest of my life. in fact, now that i look at him, it's as if the knot in his mouth is a stray strand of grass, like he's building a nest. he's here for good. he's home.

cute bird tattoosThis is my next tattoo - in black, white, and either grey or light blue. My grandmother loved to bird-watch, and her favorite bird was the chickadee. She'd call to them, "chickadee-dee-dee" and we'd sit on the porch and watch them. I was inspired by an ink-stamp I saw online, so I drew it. I might make the legs a bit smaller, and retouch the feathers. I'm not so good at drawing birdies. And I have yet to find a place on my body to put this little fellow. But I'm not in any rush - I have to save up some money first. ^_^

The arrangement of birds on the wires (with the flying bird) is: 01001101 01001111 01010110 01000101 Which means MOVE in binary. If the flying bird flies away, it changes to: 01001100 01001111 01010110 01000101 Which translates to LOVE.
