AINU FAMILY in AINU KIMONO
Ca. 1904 photograph by H.G. Ponting. Ponting loved Japan, but HATED how the Japanese Government treated the Ainu. Of course, the Ainu were in Japan way before the Japanese showed up (just like the Okinawans had Okinawa all to themselves before the Japanese invaded that Kingdom and messed things up for them as well). Now, however, the Ainu, Japanese, and Okinawans are all ONE BIG HAPPY FAMILY (at least according to the Japanese Ministry of Whitewashing). It's difficult to notice, but the ladies all have mustaches tattooed onto their upper lips. (Certain photographic emulsions did not record certain tattoo inks very well). Although the "Grass Roof" was standard throughout Japan, the Ainu were the only ones to build with the 'stepped" layering you see here. This pic is a half-stereoview from a large series taken by Ponting....all in 3-D..

THE TATTOOED MEN of OLD JAPAN 入れ墨
Early 1870s photograph by Baron von Stillfried, taken in his Yokohama Studio. I have posted several Tattoo shots that may be seen in the TATTOO set, and still have a few to go. In these images, the men seem to be truly Tattooed, and one that I have shows this clearly with no tinting. However, it also looks like the colorists 'took liberties" and did not always stick to the lines on the skin. Going purely by the evidence, the tattoos in the photo above appear to be a mixture of fiction and truth --- with ART winning out in places where I cannot see underneath the colors. I have been told by others that all of these are FAKES, but under the lens, this does not appear to be the case. I will work on something more definitive in the future. This photo is getting close to 140 years old, is not in the best of shape, but like all old TATTOO shots, can't help but catch the eye no matter what.
THE OLD JAPANESE TATTOO -- Art and Artifice in the Camera 入れ墨
Ca.1885-1895, 8" x 10" hand-tinted albumen photograph, by unknown Japanese photographer. The above photo is all about the what you see on the man's LOWER BACK. My last post of two Japanese gentlemen and their "full body" tattoos brought up a chain of comments that brought the authenticity of the hand-colored images under question. Specifically, the possibility that these old photos of Tattooed Postmen and etc are FAKE --- that is, the crude (and sometimes flowery) designs possibly being a complete fabrication by the studio colorist, applied to UN-TATTOED bodies of male studio models. Although my own examination under a lens showed the occasional "trace" of something really there, the hand-tinting often overwhelmed it. I had been taught long ago that certain emulsions used during the Meiji era had a low sensitivity to certain blue colors and pigments, thus diminishing the photographic .
TATTOOED POST RUNNER -- Delivering the mail in Old Japan (3) 入れ墨
This brings to an end the TATTOOED POST RUNNERS in my boxes of old prints. The other two from the same 1880s-90s period can bee seen in the TATTOO set. The difference between the others and the one above is obvious : THIS guy is running in the opposite direction from the other two, and here, we also get a look at his.... uhhhhhh.... rather loose diaper. I mean FUNDOSHI. Sorry, but, even with the ALL SIZES button, you won't see anything more in the (ahem) "shadows" than what you see in the regular size version above.) Although, the picture does look good when you enlarge it. Notice that the colorists who "transformed" this black & white print about 120 years ago were about as generally faithful to the underlying tattoo patterns as they were with the branch and leaf patterns of the tree over his head. A fuller discussion of the "liberties" taken by the colorists when hand tinting t.
