THE TATTOOED MEN of OLD JAPAN 入れ墨
Early 1870s photograph by Baron von Stillfried, taken in his Yokohama Studio. I have posted several Tattoo shots that may be seen in the TATTOO set, and still have a few to go. In these images, the men seem to be truly Tattooed, and one that I have shows this clearly with no tinting. However, it also looks like the colorists 'took liberties" and did not always stick to the lines on the skin. Going purely by the evidence, the tattoos in the photo above appear to be a mixture of fiction and truth --- with ART winning out in places where I cannot see underneath the colors. I have been told by others that all of these are FAKES, but under the lens, this does not appear to be the case. I will work on something more definitive in the future. This photo is getting close to 140 years old, is not in the best of shape, but like all old TATTOO shots, can't help but catch the eye no matter what.
