In thailand, tattoos like this offer protection in dangerous professions (motorbikers, construcion workers, boxers...). The symbols require activation by a practicing monk at temple or a mentor (which i learned i couldn't do becasue i'm a woman). I figured my time on the road might call for a spell anyways: it's basically 'protection for the lone traveler'. The smaller symbols inside are marks of the villages. Elephants indicate wisdom and good luck, which is fine by me: I rode an elephant years ago and since then, i've run into a few (or they've run into me)..
