This photograph of a man sporting a magnificent "Buddah tattoo" was taken in late August on the beach at Beidaihe in Hebei province (two hours east of Beijing by express train). The tattoo in China has had, let's say, a chequered history. Famous wearers include the Song dynasty hero, Shi Jin, who is just as well-known by his alternative name of Jiu Wen Long (Nine tattooed dragons). The book that captured the story of Shi Jin (the "Chinese Robin Hood) and his 107 comrades is called the "Water Margin" (Shuihu zhuang), and was probably written in the mid-14th century by Suzhou-born Shi Naian. Shi Jin was the most famous of the 13 who were tattooed (his story is told in chapters 2 and 3 of the 100-chapter classic). The band of 108 bothers' fight against corruption in the Song dynasty has inspired many throughout the centuries; and it is thought that this story has made an important cont.
